I’m looking into spirituality/Paganism and some of the rituals would really, really help me out. Unfortunately my Dad isn’t really accepting of my beliefs (and he won’t let me light candles in the house) and my Mum is still uncertain, but she’s starting to come around. Plus I’m a student on a really tight budget! Can I do rituals/chants without candles, casting circles, smudging, or anything like that? Any relevant websites or advice would be much appreciated – thanks!

It is possible to do rituals without tools, yes, but it is always best to start with tools. These can serve as your foci in the beginning. Creation of tools, preparation for the ritual, and performance of it also serve to improve your creativity, imagine and discipline.
I’m not sure what path you are following, but for a lot of practitioners, they create their own tools from natural or readily available materials.
If you’re not allowed to use candles, use electric lights instead, a spray, etc. Of course, to the traditional practitioner this is blasphemy and sacrilege. But for the modern magician, this is just making use of what we have, and evolving with the times.
    I hope that helped.

ABSOLUTELY! Tools are optional. They are there to help you get your mind set right to do spellcraft. You can feel the presents of the deities without lighting candles. You can use your index and middle fingers extended as an atheme. You can draw a pentacle (either for real or just trace the shape of one) on your workspace.
Tools aren’t important. The energy you bring and use is what counts! Here’s another trick I’ve learned. If you have nothing at all, not even an alter in front of you, you can invision the space. Close your eyes and visualize everything you need. The alter, the tools, everything. I’ve done a few spells like this and they were quite amazing. When your mind creates all your objects then they are 100% extensions of you. Also, you can do some amazing things in your visions that you can’t do in real life. You can light candles with a wave of your hand, you can trace your pentacle and have it shine with brilliant light.
Email me if you’d like any more insight to this kind of spellcraft. I personally really enjoy using it.
As a point of note, you still need to do things like cast circles and create sacred space. These tasks never require tools so there is no reason not to do them.

Tools are used to help you to visualize the energies you send out. They aren’t necessary. You are born with everything you need. You don’t need to light candles if you are unable to or can use those battery operated kinds. You can use your finger as a wand, and a stick of cinnamon as incense. You can use your imagination. You don’t have to use anything at all if you don’t want to either. Remember, tools are just to help with visualization, they aren’t a requirement.

You don’t have to be rich to cast a spell. Some just require jotting something on a piece of paper and sleeping on it. Or putting a certain flower on the western side of your room.
I encourage some feng-shui. The beauty of Paganism is it doesn’t box you in. Its about whats in your head and heart.

    You only need you.
But note that it may require a lot more work and concentration, depending on your skill. As for restrictions, this site: http://www.collegewicca.com/ has some ideas on how to work within imposed constraints similar to yours. Even with tools, you do not need to spend a lot of money. Be resourceful. Read a lot. But above all, remember to give your regular school work and studies TOP priority.
