depends on the spell–most of them give specific instructions for that–unless you write your own and then you have to go with a feeling

Personally, I always try to let my candles burn out on their own without extinguishing them when I am doing any sort of candle magick. If I am not in the same room as the candle, I make sure that the candle is in a safe place. I only put the candle out if I absolutely must leave, but then I am sure to relight the candle when I get back. I personally feel that if I extinguish a spell candle, I may be extinguising some of the magick. This is what feels right for me.

You know, I find this can be a matter of personal preference/personal ability. I myself have found that most candle spells work just as well, if not often even better, if I leave the candle alone to burn (in a safe place of course.) But others feel that doing that is harmful to a spell since it’s breaking your concentration on the matter.
So, I think the first thing to determine is whether you are one of the people who is able to effect things with mental power alone (in which case it very well might be harmful to break the concentration!) or if your abilities are reliant on other methods (as, say, the energy given off by the flame itself.)

Give the spell energy, then let it burn somewhere safe. Remember don’t leave candles unattended.
