diferent colors are used for different purposes. also they are lit at different time, depending on the purpose or need.
In order to answer the “how”, it really depends on what you want to do.
People here seem to say it doesn’t work , but I think the main point here and of any type of ritual is “intention” and the energy you put towards it. regardless of religion or ritual.

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin, never known to fail.
Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful vine of splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein, You are my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me into necessity. (Make your request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us that have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your Hands, (3 times).
Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you.

Even Scott Cunningham said candlemagic didn’t work, or chanting and he wrote books on the subject. What does work though is praying to Jesus Christ. I was a pagan for 30 years and yes I did get magic to work but the end result leads to hell. What good was it for me to do love spells and blow up substations with my power if in the end I’d spend eternity in hell. Since becoming a Christian I’ve found real power, true power, which has no limits. Now God supplies all my needs.

Candles are just one of many tools for doing magic. You can use a candle for meditation, as a tool to focus on.
Here is a good site on spellcraft – including candle magick:http://www.ladybridget.com/scmenu.html

about the same way prayer works, completely ineffective.
