He starts the series as a sudent in a castle teaching sword fighting and such, then he meets a magician/wizard/sorcerer and goes with him to learn magic, only now he is not allowed to wield steel, like a sword. He’s really bad at the start but an assesment where he draws the power from a candle instead of blowing it out shows this is because he always does things the hard way. End of first book he has to fight agains a teacher who is evil and ends up using a sword, he gets promoted to journeyman then but is no longer allowed to use magic. Sound familiar to anyone? Please?
