Question/doubt about praying to a certain spirit (magic, spells, brujeria, etc.)?

Hello!

I am asking this question because I have grown up around people who are really into all that has to do with “brujeria” as they call it (spanish for magic, “black” magic, spells, etc.)

I don’t personally try such things but I have so many questions I wonder about when thinking about that subject. I’ve seen such things “work” and along with that comes the questions of “is this all true?” “Is it really help from that spirit being prayed to, or is it just the faith and power put into it what causes the effect?”

Etc.

Right now, I have an aunt who lights up a 7day candle to Saint Martha Dominator, it is said she’s in charge of dominating, binding, bringing back or attracting a specific person. The candle brings the prayer on the back, and every 7 days after it completely burns out, it is replaced with another candle for the same spirit. (I guess the more you pray to it or the more candles you light up as each one burns out causes more power or more effect, I don’t know, but makes “sense”). This is what lead me to ask since I do not want to ask anyone who I personally know who does this, because otherwise I could get into doing the same, which I’ve avoided every time they have started such conversation with me.

Regardless of feeling uncomfortable by admitting that I have family members who believe in this (because I know lots of people see this a really wrong) I am just curious how this all works when praying to a spirit who is known for whatever it may be the cause a person is dealing with.

What do you think, know, or say to this?
And would you happen to know if the replacement of a candle is a way to keep the “spell” going?
Is it really a spirit in specific, or any spirit who answers? Or could it be just the faith put into it and the mind power along with it?

I have heard about magick like candle magic and stuff like that,but is there a type of magic where you use wands?Sort of like Harry Potter or something?

Anyone Know A Book About A Boy Wizard That Goes To Magic School And Tries To Light A Candle? Not Harry Potter?

I am looking for a series of books about a boy wizard that goes off to wizard’s school to learn about magic, and no I’m not looking for Harry Potter.
From what I remember about the first book in the series the boy has a hard time learning to use magic to light a candle. After he learns magic to a certain point he goes out on his own(possibly with companions) to learn more about magic and go on some adventure.
I remember the colors of the books being pastel, the first book I think was colored an orange pastel color.
If anyone could help me out I’d really appreciate it. I remember really enjoying these books as a kid and would love to find them again.

I have considered myself a Pagan for about 5 years now and I’ve done a few candle spells, and most of them worked great. I always write the spell down on paper as well as burn the candle and recite it. What should I do with the paper after the spell is done, I don’t really remember what I did before it’s been a while, but I know it worked before.
