Anyone Know A Book About A Boy Wizard That Goes To Magic School And Tries To Light A Candle? Not Harry Potter?

I am looking for a series of books about a boy wizard that goes off to wizard's school to learn about magic, and no I'm not looking for Harry Potter.
From what I remember about the first book in the series the boy has a hard time learning to use magic to light a candle. After he learns magic to a certain point he goes out on his own(possibly with companions) to learn more about magic and go on some adventure.

And im getting no where looking i found something then looked at something else that said complete opposite so im starting to get irratated lol.
Soooo..... im going back to the good old fashioned way does any1 no any good candle magic books i can buy in the UK ??
